After wrapping up the first part of this shoot more than a month ago, it still feels completely surreal to be chosen to photograph the main visuals for the new HARRIS Hotel & Conventions Sunshine Penang, managed by Ascott Limited.

For decades, growing up as a Penang Island kid in Farlim, Sunshine Farlim in Ayer Itam was where my family went for grocery shopping—and we still do today. It is nothing short of awe-inspiring to watch it evolve from a neighbourhood convenience store into this monumental multi-development project. Today, Sunshine Central stands as one of the biggest project in the Ayer Itam and Paya Terubong township, and the first fully integrated mixed-use development in Penang.

I couldn't be more proud to see such an iconic landmark rise in the heart of our town, and even prouder to be given the chance to capture and present the hotel portion of this massive project.

But capturing an international chain hotel at this scale and significance requires more than just showing up and pressing the shutter. Because this project means so much to my hometown, I wanted to ensure every shot was executed with absolute intention.

The Real Reason We Still Do All the Heavy Lifting on-Site When Photographing Harris Hotel

Even with the wide range of powerful AI and post-editing tools available today, getting it right in-camera is still crucial. This is because real intention happens right on set, not when covering potholes after the fact. And that level of intention can only be achieved with proper project management. After all, a location shoot is, at its core, an exercise in management—It's about managing time, orchestrating people, and decisively staging a scene.

Knowing exactly what to include and, just as importantly, what to exclude is essential. On top of that, it requires managing timing, lighting, composition, and perspective to build the foundation of a great frame that will stand the test of time while representing the location itself.

Collage below showed the actual site vs. the final image. From there you can see how we handle on-site challenges using timing, styling, composition, and most importantly how we craft the final scene to a point that some of these location closely matches our final image through careful execution. I will also be taking this opportunity to thank the entire Ascott and Harris Sunshine Hotel team for all the hardwork catering to all the big and small demands. It certainly wasn't an easy feat but we got through it together!
